The intriguing story of the Devon Rex finds its origins in the rural landscapes of Buckfastleigh, Devon, England. At the heart of this story lies Kirlee, a curly-coated kitten whose unique story echoes the charm seen in the Aristocats movie, and serves as the cornerstone of this exceptional breed.
It all began with a feral barn queen, whose unexpected litter included a peculiar kitten with an extraordinary feature. Born on July 15, 1959, this particular kitten stood out against the litter mates with a curly, soft, and velvety coat, a departure from the norm of straight, or long fur. Although the identity of the sire was a mystery, speculation arose around a local tomcat who was known for his curly tail-ringlets. Subsequent breedings proved Kirlee’s status as a carrier of long hair.
The birth of Kirlee did not escape the notice of Miss Beryl Cox, a passionate cat enthusiast enchanted by his unique look. Recognising the potential significance of Kirlee’s coat, Cox took him under her wing and initiated a meticulous breeding program to preserve and propagate his distinctive traits. Through careful pairings, and co-ordinating matings with the Cornwall rexed cats, it was revealed that the Devonshire cats were a completely different mutation. The Cornwall cats went on to be called Cornish Rex, and Kirlee’s descendants went on to be known as the Devon Rex.
As Cox continued her selective breeding efforts, interest in the Devon Rex breed surged among the fanciers, drawn not only to the breed’s striking appearance, but also to its amiable temperament. While the exact date of the breed’s debut in English cat shows varies, it is believed that the first presentation occurred in London in 1960, with subsequent appearances in Europe around 1965.
The acceptance of the Devon Rex into European cat shows marked a pivotal moment in its journey towards international recognition within the feline community. Since its introduction, the Devon Rex has captivated cat enthusiasts worldwide, cementing its status as a cherished and distinguished breed.
